Lake Conroe Texas Area Information - Conroe, Willis and Montgomery
Lake Conroe is located 40 miles north of Houston, on the west fork of the San Jacinto River. It was built as a joint project of the City of Houston, the Texas Water Development Board and the San Jacinto River Authority in 1973 as an alternate water source for the City of Houston.  It is a 21,000 acre lake, bordering on not only Conroe, but surrounding areas Montgomery and Willis.  Often referred  to  as  "Houston's Playground",  Lake  Conroe is
